Cell Notes

Cell Notes

  • Animal cells are generally round/circular in shape.

  • Plant cells are generally square/rectangular in shape.

  • Robert hooked used a compound microscope and looked at a thin piece of cork.He called what he saw cells.

  • Anton van Leeuwenhoek designed a microscope. He used a simple microscope and looked at pond water and what he saw he called animalcules. He also looked at teeth scrapings and discovered what we now call bacteria.

  • The Cell Theory states that all cells come from other cells. The cell theory is a widely accepted relationship between cells and living things.

  • Cells are the basic unit of structure and function of all living things

  • All living things are composed of cells.Cells are the building blocks of life.

  • The invention of the microscope made it possible for us to discover all we know about cells. Microscopes make things look larger.

  • The discoveries of Hooke, Leeuwenhoek, Schwann, Scheliden, and Virchow led to the development of the cell theory

  • An organelle is a tiny cell structure that carries out a specific function within a cell.

Examples would include:

  • Nucleus
  • Mitochondria
  • Lysosomes
  • Vacuole
  • Endoplasmic Reticulum
  • Cell membrane
  • Ribosomes
  • Golgi Bodies
  • Cell wall
  • Chloroplast

ALL living things need water in order to live.
