**Measurement Notes**** **

Measurement-the size or amount of something

Unit-an amount that is used by everyone when measuring a particular thing

Standard-a unit that serves as a basis for certain measurements

Metric Unit-a unit of measurement that is based on the number ten and multiples of ten

SI-International System of Units

The SI Units are also known as the metric system and are used by the scientific community as a standard.

Customary is not the same as metric

Length/Distance

The basic unit is meter

Tools: metric ruler, meter stick, trundle wheel and tape measure

Area-the number of square units (units ^{2 })that is needed to cover a space

Volume of a Liquid or Gas

The basic unit is a liter

Tools: graduated cylinder and beaker

Volume is the number of cubic units (units ^{3}) that is needed to fill a space

Solid volume is measured in two ways.

- If a solid has a regular shape you use the formula l x w x h (cm
^{3}) - If a solid has an irregular shape you place the object in water in a graduated cylinder or beaker and you measure the water displacement

mL = cm^{3}

When using a graduated cylinder or a beaker, you use the bottom of the meniscus to take a reading .

Temperature

The metric unit of measure for temperature is degrees Celsius. (^{o}C)

Tool: thermometer

Water freezes at 0^{o}C, boils at 100^{o}C and normal body temperature is 37^{o}C

Mass

The basic unit for mass is the gram

Tools: triple beam balance, balance scale

Mass is the measure of the amount of matter in an object

Mass does not mean weight.

Mass is constant and weight is determined by the pull of gravity on the object

Time

The basic unit is seconds

Tools: clock, watch, timer and stop watch
