PS 2 Nature of Matter
• Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space (volume)
• Mass is measured using a balance and the unit used is grams
• Volume is measured using a ruler (LxWxH) and the unit is meters 3 /cm 3 and a graduated cylinder and the unit is liters’
• Irregular Objects-measured in the water and look for the amount of water displacement
• Matter can be described using physical properties (adjectives, description-examples: orange , round, smooth)
• Matter can be described using chemical properties (the ability to do something-examples: burn, melt, rust)
• Physical Properties Mnemonic Device:
o Some Crazy Hopping Hippos On MTV
o ○ S- State (solid, liquid, gas)
o C- Color
o H – Height
o H- Hardness
o O-Odor
o M- Mass
o T- Texture
o V- Volume
• Chemical properties: How it reacts to something else
• All matter is made up of small particles called atoms
• There are 4 states of Matter: solid, liquid, gas and plasma
• Matter can be classified as
o Element- is a substance that cannot be broken down by chemical means. Atoms of any element are alike but are different from atoms of other elements.
Example: Hydrogen (H)
o Compound- is formed when two or more elements that are chemically combined in fixed ratio. Example: water (H 2 O)
o Mixture- is what you get when you combine two or more substances, but the substances are not chemically combined.

Particle Theory of Matter
The particle theory of matter postulates the following:
1. All matter is made up of tiny particles called atoms.
2. Particles of matter are constantly in motion.
3. Particles of matter attract each other.
4. Particles of matter have spaces between them.
5. As temperature increases, particles of matter move faster.
6. Atoms of the same element are essentially identical.
7. Atoms of different elements are different.
